When you enter username and password to log into Windows XP, the operating system saves this information. This information is called user credential. When you connect to other PCs in your workgroup, which require you to enter username and password, the operating system will use your existing user credential to allow your connection to the other computer.

However, if your username and password in the saved credentials are not the same as those required by the PC you are trying to connect to, you will see 2 items:

  1. A dialog box with a tick-box, named “Remember My Password”

  2. A logon dialog window that will ask you to enter username and password

If you check off the “Remember My Password” tick-box, the Stored User Names and Passwords application will save your credentials in your profile. When you will connect to the same computer in future, Windows XP will use the same credentials and automatically authenticate your account to let you log in.

If you like to change or view your credentials, you can use the Stored User Names and Password tool to do so. Here is how to access it:

  • Open Windows RUN window by pressing Windows Key + R

  • Type rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr and click OK. The Stored User Names and Passwords tool will open.

  • To view or change existing user credential, select it from the shown list then click on the Properties button to see the Logon Information Properties dialog box.

  • If you want to add a new user credential, click on the Add button and enter appropriate information in the fields.

  • To delete an existing user credential, click on the Remove button then click OK.

  • Click the Close button to exit the tool.
