The word environment means ‘surroundings’. It includes everything that we depend on during the course of our life such as air, water, soil, plant, animals etc. The most serious environmental problem of today is the pollution of air, water and soil, lives of endangered species of plants and animals, global warming, breaking of ozone layer, acid rains and destruction of tropical rain forests.

| Renewable energy is the energy, which comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat, which are renewable (naturally replenished). New renewables includes small hydro, modern biomass, wind, solar, geothermal, and bio fuels

| Thermal Pollution may be defined as an accumulation of unusable heat from human activities that disrupts ecosystems in natural environments. The main source of this type of pollution are the heat-producing industries which mainly include the thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, petroleum refineries, steel mills, chemical plants, pulp and paper mills etc. Much of the heat rejected from these industries is in the form of condenser cooling water. The heated effluents are discharged at a temperature 80C to 100C higher than the temperature of intake water.

There are problems with the mining of the fossil fuels, too. In the process of mining and using fossil fuels, we destroy ecosystems. If there were a way we could mine and use fossil in ways that do not damage our ecology, then there wouldn’t have been a problem.
